About

Metro Trains Melbourne is an essential service and the franchise operator of Melbourne's metropolitan railway network. Metro operates, maintains, and builds the rail network, and partners with the State Government to build city-shaping projects. A strategic priority is providing a great passenger experience, so passengers are at the heart of everything Metro does. With more than 7,000 team members across Melbourne, Metro has strong values grounded in operating Safely Always. Metro's purpose is to move Melbourne, and its vision is shaping our future to be a world-class railway for Melbourne. At the core of everything Metro does are its values and behaviours of Safely Always, Caring, One Team, Dependable and Make a Difference. Culture thrives when people really live it: Metro sets standards for how it defines itself, then sets goals for how it wants to grow, and its people both help define those principles and live them. Metro strives to reflect the community it serves, which means committing to a more diverse and inclusive workplace. In the last 10 years, Metro has more than doubled the number of women in the business. That means being a strong advocate for initiatives that encourage more women to join, and listening to women on the team about how to improve their work experience and retain their expertise. Women at Metro contribute across all areas of the business, busting the myth that careers in rail are just for men. In 2020, 74 per cent of roles were filled by women. In 2009, there were 26 female train drivers working for Metro Trains; in 2025 there are more than 580. Metro's rail network is closely linked with the lives of millions of people across Melbourne, and the company works to have a positive community impact in and around the network through programs including an annual community grants round and support for fundraising efforts at its stations. Metro is committed to developing its colleagues and runs a Registered Training Organisation called the Metro Academy. It provides safe systems and a wellbeing team that includes peer supporters and wellness advocates, and offers employees discounts promoted throughout the year. The Employee Assistance Program is a confidential service for employees and their immediate families, offering confidential counselling, whether financial or psychological; employees can call at any time, with no leader or manager made aware if contact is made. Metro employees are also provided with a Myki card, which allows free public transport travel within Victoria.
